In 2011, five grants Gpa Scholarship will be offered. Grants are awarded in both biological/non-clinical and clinical/psychosocial research areas. This year, one grant will be awarded to reflect the Consumer Dementia Research Network priority areas. Alzheimer’s Australia Research Limited (AAR) is a non-profit company formed to promote, disseminate and fund research into all aspects of dementia. Every year, there is an application process for grants and Gpa Scholarship. The 2011 Dementia Grants Program consists of four main categories – research, travel, postgraduate Gpa Scholarship and postdoctoral fellowships. Applicants are entitled to apply only once in each of the categories. Successful applicants must acknowledge the support of Alzheimer’s Australia Research (AAR) in all publications, presentations, summary findings and media announcements relating to the research, provide progress reports on the research and be prepared to assist AAR, if required, by speaking at an Alzheimer’s Australia function, attending specified conferences, hosting laboratory visits, or being featured in media articles/releases for AAR.

Eligibility:

The principal investigator must be a new investigator (defined solely as never being a principal investigator on a successful research grant worth more than $30,000). Funding

The Jefferson Fellowships are supported from a grant from The Freeman Foundation. The grant funds economy class, roundtrip airfare to and from Honolulu, Hawaii as well as program-related air and ground transportation, lodging, and meals for participating journalists. A modest per diem is also provided. Participants are responsible for all applicable visa fees and any additional visa-related expenses.

International PhD Programme in Skeletal Muscle Sciences

In November 2009 the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) established MyoGrad – the International Research Training Group for Myology. Partner institutions are the Free University Berlin and the Medical Faculty of the Charité in Berlin together with the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris (Paris VI). The working language of the program is English.

MyoGrad seeks to attract excellent and highly motivated students who wish to obtain a PhD in the field of muscle-related cell and molecular biology and intend to embark on a scientific career. Applications from medical doctors with a keen interest in clinical and scientific aspects of muscle diseases are also welcome. In addition the program runs its own MD-PhD program to enroll future physician scientists.

Students accepted by MyoGrad will conduct a bi-nationally supervised doctoral thesis (co-tutelle de thèse) within one of the 9 projects of the training group. They will enroll in both Berlin and Paris University (with tuition paid once) and do research work both in Berlin and in Paris labs. At this early stage of their career they will already be part of a very prestigious muscle science research community. After three years students are expected to defend their dissertation before a dissertation committee equally composed of German and French academic representatives. Successful students will obtain one doctoral degree by both universities.

In the course of the program MyoGrad students have also access to complementary training classes in transferable skills (writing scientific papers, grant application etc.) thus ensuring long-term scientific success. Teaching in Summer School settings, continuous communication between students and teachers in seminars and journal clubs face-to-face and online and a myology “E-learning” platform are the cornerstones of the educational concept.

Students eligible for the program must meet the following criteria:

Above average qualifications and grades ("good“ or "excellent") together with a strong interest in scientific issues regarding muscle-related cell and molecular biology or in clinical and scientific aspects of muscle diseases are expected.

“Hydrological Modeling of Nitrate Transport and Reduction at Catchment Scale”

The scholarship is linked to a research center on ?Nitrate reduction in geologically heterogeneous catchments (NICA)” funded by the Program Commission on Sustainable Energy and Environment under the Danish Council for Strategic Research.
The PhD study must start January 1, 2011.

Research outline:

Nitrate leaching from agricultural areas is one of the major water resources management problems in Denmark. Today it is impossible to differentiate between vulnerable areas from where nitrate leaching reaches the surface water with very little reduction and robust areas where almost all leached nitrate is reduced. This is a serious constraint for designing cost-effective water management measures.

NICA will develop tools for assessing nitrate reduction in the subsurface between the root zone and the streams and methodologies for assessing at which spatial scales such tools have predictive capabilities. State-of-the-art and novel hydrological models (DAISY, MIKE SHE/MIKE11, HydroGeoSphere, RWHET) will be applied and the effect of geological heterogeneity will be analysed by use of stochastic geological realisations using TPROGS. A new concept, Representative Elementary Scale (RES), will be developed for assessing the minimum scale at which models, with a given data input, potentially have predictive capabilities. The studies will be conducted in two 10 km2, well instrumented catchments and tested in a 101 km2 catchment, where farmers will be actively involved in evaluating possible measures for reducing the nitrate load to surface water in a cost-effective manner.

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in a discipline of relevance for the research project. The successful candidate should have strong skills in hydrology and hydrological modeling.

An opportunity is currently available for a post-doctoral research trainee to join the Cognitive Neuroscience of Communication and Hearing Laboratory at Queen's University, Canada, led by Dr Ingrid Johnsrude. The post is for two years initially with the possibility of an extension.

The research focus of the lab is communication in challenging listening environments. Current projects use a variety of behavioural (psychophysical and neuropsychological) and functional imaging methods to study speech production, hearing, auditory perceptual organization and speech comprehension, in neurologically normal young and older people. The lab is a vibrant and multidisciplinary environment, and includes people with backgrounds in psychology, neuroscience, computer science and engineering. The successful applicant will assume a leadership role within the lab, participate actively in ongoing activities, and will be encouraged to develop their own research program.

Eligible candidates

Successful candidates will have a PhD in psychology, neuroscience, or a related discipline. Expertise in functional magnetic resonance imaging, signal processing, psychoacoustics, neuropsychology, auditory neuroscience, cognitive psychology and/or perceptual psychology is desirable but not essential.

The London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) is the leading UK laboratory dedicated specifically to nanoscience research. We are participating in a recently funded Marie Curie Training Network (SMALL - www.small-itn.eu). As part of the SMALL network we are seeking a PhD student who will carry out cutting edge research focusing on electronic structure simulations of water-oxide interfaces. In addition, there will be many opportunities for travel to the other European partners in the network.

Funding for this position will be for three years to allow for completion of the PhD.

Eligible Candidates

The successful student will have a Masters degree (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry or material science and will be required to carry out theoretical research (including the development and application of computer simulation techniques) into water oxide interfaces. He/she will have a strong background in Chemistry and Physics demonstrated by the successful completion of courses in e.g. condensed matter physics, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, chemical bonding. However, there are specific restrictions on eligibility. Specifically, researchers can be of any European nationality other than British. Exceptions include those researchers with more than one nationality, in which case they are eligible if they have not resided in the UK for the previous 5 years. Also eligible are those that have resided and worked for at least three out of the last 4 years in another country. Students must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.

This year’s round of 1854 Scholarships is now open for applications.

The 1854 Scholarships were established in 2004 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the museum. They are awarded to students undertaking an Honours, Masters or PhD research project related to Museum Victoria’s collections, or in association with a Museum researcher. Scholarships may be awarded in the fields of Natural Sciences, Australian History & Technology, and Indigenous Cultures.

Unemployed NYC Sues for $ 70K in college education costs

NEW YORK - A woman in New York City, who says he can not find work in college, where he earned a bachelor's go.

Trina Thompson was a complaint last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court. The 27 years, it looks for the $ 70,000 will be spent on education.

Thompson says he has not able to find a job, because he received his diploma in computer science in April.

He says the Bronx school has no career of her office with the door and career coaching promises.

Monroe College Axelbank spokesman Gary Thompson said the process is completely unfounded.

The College calls it will help their graduates in seeking employment.

Inlaks Scholarships

Inlaks Scholarships provide the opportunity to young people with exceptional talent in any field to broaden their vision abroad and improve their skills to operate in society, thus making them a future vehicle of change in their environment. The scholarships are of two types: university courses and specific programs.

University Courses

Scholarships for up to 2 years at top American, European and UK institutions, for degrees in all kind of subjects, except Engineering, Computer Science, Urban Planning, Business Studies, Medicine, Public Health, Indian Studies and History. Candidates must have admission to their proposed course of studies before applying.

Specific Programs Proposed by the Candidate

Scholarships for research, training or professional improvement to be carried out abroad either independently, or attached to a leading institution. Candidates are expected to provide full details of their proposed programs, including time and travelling plans, a full breakdown of costs, and evidence of agreement with such institutions if required.

Eligibility

* Scholarships are open to all Indians of either sex who hold a good degree from a recognised university and are resident in India at the time of application. All applicants must have done their first degree in India.
* It is essential to have prior admission to the institution and course chosen. The Foundation will not consider candidates without admission or pending admission. The institutions concerned must only be top rank.
* Candidates must be below 30 years of age on the first of July in the year of application. Preference will be given to candidates who have not yet studied abroad. Candidates who are already studying or have started their program abroad are not eligible.
* The award of other grants, teaching assistantships and support from other sources for the proposed programme will be regarded by the Foundation as a positive factor. The Foundation also encourages applications from young people currently employed.

How We Decide

* The Foundation has been awarding scholarships to deserving young Indian since 1976. Few other foundations have during this period, given as many scholarships in as many and such varied fields.
* The key to Inlaks is flexibility. We look for the unusual, we search out a special talent and we spot people with flair. And once we are convinced that we have found it, we will do everything possible to accommodate a worthy candidate.
* It is perhaps for this reason that a list of Inlaks alumni reads like a "Who's Who" of young India.

So what should you be concerned about?

* Your achievements, academic and otherwise. We will need proof that you are an achiever.
* Your potential. We pride ourselves on judging potential as much as performance. It isn't just what you have already achieved; it's what we can help you achieve in the future.

The suitability of your course, project or programme. You must persuade us that the course/ programme is right for you and that you are right for it.

Application and Selection Procedure

Application forms are available from the 10th of January to the 15th of April from the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, C/o Inlaks India Foundation, 86/87 Atlanta, Nariman Point Mumbai 400021. They must be completed by the Candidate and submitted at the same address by 15th of April. They must include:

* Evidence of admission to a university or a course, and full details of the institute's financial requirements.
* One self - addressed stamped, (Rs. 10.00) envelope (4" X 9").
* Candidates in architecture, fine and applied arts, and related subjects must submit twelve colour transparencies of recent creative work in a plastic folder, giving the size of the original, the material used and the date of completion. This material will not be returned. Candidates for Film, Dance and Acting must submit CD, which will be returned. Candidates for Music should submit tapes/scripts.
* Evidence of any outstanding achievements in extra-curricular activities in any field.
* Do not send copies of academic certificates with the completed form. These will be needed only at the time of the final interviews. An independent Inlaks Selection Committee carries out the selection.
Applications received are analysed and evaluated, and the Committee subsequently calls the most interesting candidates for interviews. All applicants must be available for interviews in India. They usually take place in Mumbai or Delhi at the end of May, in two stages: preliminaries, and for those who make it, finals. Candidates short-listed for the interviews will have to arrange for their own travel and accommodation. Candidates who do not receive any communication by 1st of June must assume that their applications have not been successful.

Terms of the Scholarship

The duration of the scholarship is up to 2 years. It covers for the period granted tuition fees, adequate living expenses and one-way travel. In case of specific programs the financial coverage will be discussed directly with the candidate. Those opting for courses lasting for more than 2 years (i.e. Ph.D.) will have to seek funding from other sources. Acceptance of other scholarships, teaching assistantships and part time jobs are welcome after approval from the Foundation.

Scholarship will not be awarded to candidates whose proposed course of study or specific project requires field trips back to India during tenure.

Scholarships are awarded in June generally for commencement in subsequent September and October.

The Udall Foundation awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates whose research concerns U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation. Dissertation Fellowships are intended to cover both academic and living expenses from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. he dissertation fellowship is intended to offset a scholar's living expenses while he or she focuses on completing the dissertation, and must be used during the final year of writing the dissertation. It is anticipated that the doctoral degree will be received at the end of the fellowship year, and a copy of the dissertation remitted to the Foundation. The Foundation regards the acceptance of a fellowship as a contract that requires fulfillment of the following terms: 1) A Udall Dissertation Fellow is required to pursue his or her project full time during the fellowship year, July 1 - June 30. No partial fellowships are awarded. 2) Any significant changes in plans for the fellowship year must have the prior written approval of the Foundation. 3) The Foundation must be notified promptly of any change in the status of an application resulting from acceptance of another award. 4) Stipend checks are made payable to fellows, not to institutions. 5) Dissertation fellowships fund living and educational expenses for a period of twelve months while a fellow pursues full-time writing of the dissertation. Acceptance of any concurrent funds must have prior approval of the Foundation.
